BEGIN TRANSCRIPT:
Therapist: Dana? Did you hear me?
...Oh, maybe we’re frozen.
Therapist: Ah, there you are. I thought I lost you. You never know with… anyway. How’s everything been this week? Are you still working on your channel?
If you’d rather reschedule, we can talk another time.
Dana: No.
Therapist: Would you mind sharing a bit of what you’re thinking right now?
Dana: No…
Therapist: Okay.
Dana: I’m not.
Therapist: You’re not…?
Dana: Thinking. I wasn’t.
Therapist: Where are you now?
Dana: I’m in a hotel.
Therapist: I mean mentally. You seem a bit detached.
Dana: I haven’t slept…
Therapist: What’s going on with that? Has your schedule changed?
Dana: Not really. I don’t know. It’s mostly—
Therapist: What is it?
Dana: I…
You know when you’re walking somewhere and you get this feeling and look up, and notice that you’re being watched by someone in a window or something?
I have that feeling.
All the time.
Therapist: As if you… exist under a microscope?
Dana: No, like I am actually being watched. Like I can feel the weight of someone staring. And I look around and around and up and down and no matter where I look, I don’t see anyone.
But then… sometimes…
When I’m not looking…
I see her in the corner of my eye.
Just a glimpse, and by the time I realize it, she’s gone.
Therapist: Who?
Dana: Have you ever seen a photo or video of yourself at a weird angle and for a second you don’t even know who you’re looking at?
Therapist: Sure.
Dana: Like weirdly familiar but also kind of… wrong. Like you’re seeing something you’re not supposed to.
She was across the street the first time I saw her.
And I noticed her because I thought, that’s probably what my legs look like when I walk. She was wearing skinny jeans and had kind of shorter legs, like I feel like mine look.
And she was looking the other way but she had her hair pulled back the same way I always used to wear it. And I used to wear skinny jeans like that, and she was wearing Converse like I always used to. And I didn’t know what to think. I just knew I didn’t want to get any closer.
I never saw her face, not then.
But after I turned and started walking away—
I could feel her watching me.
I still have that feeling now.
Would you recognize yourself?
If you saw yourself out in the world. Not through a filter or a screen. In real life. Would you?
Because I think something out there wants to hurt me. And…
Therapist: Yes?
Dana: I think it’s me.
